A biosource material, ecological and 100% vegan.
The apple peel is part of the surplus by-product from the food industry in South Tyrol in northern Italy. The recovered peel is dried and crushed into powder. A company in Florence processes this into ApplePeel, our vegan leather alternative, which is coated with a cotton base.
Sohotree - about SOHO and TREE.
"Our story began in 2018." Lucas Knecht, in search of a suitable model for his stolen leather rucksack, began to delve deeper into leather goods with his brother Claudius.
Leather - as they soon realized - is regarded worldwide as a noble, high-quality material and only a few doubt this. However, as their extensive research revealed, leather is disastrous from an ecological and ethical point of view, not only in terms of its origin, but above all in terms of its production. They were shocked.
"We have always liked the possible uses of leather. But both genuine leather and conventional artificial leather have a decisive disadvantage: Neither are sustainable. Not a solution for us from an ecological and ethical point of view."
The brothers wanted to change this and manufacture their own products that meet their requirements. "These should combine design, quality, function and sustainability. No more stale compromises!". They went on a search and came across an innovative material that had all the advantages of leather but was not derived from animals and did not harm the environment. And best of all, they found it on their doorstep, so to speak: the ApplePeel™. This is how Sohotree was created: SOHO stands for urban design, TREE for nature and sustainability. "With Sohotree, we are replacing real leather with our vegan ApplePeel™, a sustainable alternative made from apples." Developed and designed in Switzerland, produced in Italy. No compromises here either. "With Sohotree, we have committed ourselves to running a forward-looking and responsible company." Sustainability and design combined. That is Sohotree.
